Instructions for use: Preparing and administering an injection with the Victoza® or Saxenda® pen
This information sheet is intended to help you remember the various steps involved in safely injecting this medication. The instructions below can be used by patients who self-inject, or by those who administer injections to others.
| | - Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Prepare what you will need: the pen, a needle and alcohol wipes.
- Pull off the pen cap.
- Visually inspect the solution. Do not use if it is cloudy, discoloured, or contains particles.
- Disinfect the pen tip with an alcohol wipe.
|
| | Priming a new pen - Attach the needle and remove the caps.
- Turn the dose selector until the flow check symbol ( -- ) aligns with the pointer.
- Hold the pen vertically with the needle pointing up. Gently tap the pen tip to collect air bubbles at the top.
- Holding the pen with the needle pointing up, push and hold in the dose button until the dose display shows 0 mg. You should see a drop on the needle tip. If there is no drop, repeat the steps above.
|
| | Daily use of the pen - Attach the needle and remove the caps.
- Turn the dose selector until the dose display shows the dose prescribed to you by your doctor. Do not touch the dose display during the injection as this could interfere with the injection.
- The abdomen, thighs and upper arms are the preferred injection sites.
- The medication should be injected under the skin (subcutaneous injection). Do not inject into a vein or muscle.
- Clean the injection area with soap and water before injecting.
- Insert the needle into the skin and hold down the dose button until the dose display shows 0 mg. Wait 6 seconds before removing the needle from the skin.
- Safely remove the needle and put the pen cap on.
|
Always dispose of the needle after each injection because it could be dirty or blunt. Dispose of needles in a sharps container and return to the pharmacy when full.
